Sweet By And By

Elizabeth Cotten was a skilled self-taught guitarist and possessor of a beautiful, quiet strength that shone through the frailty of her old age. The Seegers could have done a lot worse in the nanny department.

This lovely instrumental moves from In The Sweet By And By to What A Friend We Have In Jesus, two of my favourite hymns.

Elizabeth Cotten - Sweet By And By

Buy her music.

There’s a land that is fairer than day,
And by faith we can see it afar...

Great post! I saw Cotten play on her 90th birthday, and I'll never forget it...

Long Sought Home must be tapping my phone -- I've been thinking an awful lot about Ms. Cotten lately, and now here she is. I just bought the CD "Shake Sugaree," and it seems to me that that the woman who wrote the title song must've really been something else.

On Charles Seeger's 90th birthday, Cotton (who was 81 herself) said to him, "You know, God must have forgotten about us."

Well now, how do you like that?
