I Am Bound For The Promised Land

I posted another Alfred Karnes track back in August, but he's too good not to feature here again. This song was released on Victor 20840 in 1927.
Sickness and sorrow, pain and death
are felt and feared no more...

With your title "I am Bond for the Promised Land" I thought for a moment it was going to be an article about the secret agent 007...

The melody is roughly identical to "Don't Let Your Deal Go Down," which seems to have been hugely popular around 1930 or so. I wonder which came first? By the way, I love this Alfred Karnes guy -- his complete works just doesn't seem available. Pity! Thanks for introducing me to him, LSH.

A. G. Karnes was my grandfather. I remember listening to his recordings when I was growing up. It's nice to know he has a following. I've been told that RCA/Victor has several pieces of music that he did, but they won't release them. How much truth to this there is I don't know.

My grandfather, Maynard Karnes, was Alfred's brother, and he taught me a number of those great tunes before he died back in 1964. Grandpa Maynard made a tape of his music in 1959, and although it was never published, it contains some of the finest guitar playing you will ever hear. Once I heard Uncle Alfred's songs, I could definitely hear the similarities in the quality of their voices and in their playing styles. Great stuff !
