I need to move my woodshed to a new location that's higher and dryer. So, I decided that this would be a good time to try using rollers to move it myself, as opposed to hiring someone, etc. etc. Herewith we have a pictorial overview of the resulting FAILURE: First, a few images of the new foundation (which I made over the past couple of weeks with misc rocks - not exactly hard to find around here), showing the ramps (just stacked 2 X 8s) that the woodshed was going to gracefully roll up:
And some images of the woodshed sitting on the rollers. I used Laurie's 20-ton hydraulic jack to originally lift up the building so I could slide the 2 X 8s under the building.
And the contraption I rigged up to move the woodshed:
Some exciting action shots!:
Failure! So, at first everything was going along swellingly - the building had moved about 16" or so - but then it started sliding slightly to the right. I tried adjusting the chain so that it pulled more on the left, but this didn't work, and after a little more pulling the building slid further to the right, and then fell off the 2 X 8s! This was disconcerting. I then spent a couple hours rejacking the building, moving all the 2 X 8s back into position, and then started moving the building forward again. Within a few minutes it started sliding again, and again fell off the 2 X 8s. Not being infinitely dense, I decided to take the hint.:
So, what I've decided to do is empty the woodshed completely, disassemble it, and then reassemble it on the new foundation. I'm hoping to get that done this weekend. I might even make up another exciting web page to document it! Bill Hutten June 28/2007 |
